The Nebraska State Patrol says a routine traffic stop earlier this month led to what investigators believe is the largest drug seizure in the agency’s history. Governor Jim Pillen joined NSP to detail the case, along with a second, unrelated stop that turned up stolen commercial equipment.
According to NSP, troopers stopped a truck on I-80 near Cozad on September 4 and detected the odor of marijuana. A search of the vehicle turned up 27 pallets of boxes containing marijuana, THC products, and psilocybin products, totaling nearly 20,000 pounds of contraband. Investigators estimate the street value at more than $50 million, which the agency believes makes it the largest drug seizure in its history.
A separate case began September 9, when NSP received a tip that a semi-truck traveling through Nebraska may have been hauling stolen professional speaker equipment. Troopers stopped the truck near Gothenburg and found that the driver’s delivery paperwork had been falsified. Further investigation traced the cargo to thefts reported in Illinois and New York.
After obtaining a search warrant for the trailer, investigators found it split roughly in half: one side held miscellaneous goods bound for a Walmart distribution center in Florida, while the other held high-end commercial speakers — valued at more than $250,000 — that had been reported stolen and were headed for Las Vegas. Investigators are still working to determine the full value of everything recovered.
Together, the two stops show how a single roadside encounter can unravel much larger criminal operations, from large-scale drug trafficking to interstate theft rings.
