Lt Gen Scott A. Howell is the former commander of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), retiring from the U.S. Air Force in August 2021 after a 34-year career in special operations. He deployed extensively to Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, and other global hotspots. Before leading JSOC, he served as vice commander of U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), coordinating initiatives with the Department of Defense and other agencies. Howell also commanded NATO Special Operations in Afghanistan. A CAPSTONE senior fellow at National Defense University, he holds numerous awards, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and Bronze Star, and earned degrees from the U.S. Air Force Academy and National War College.
