A Lake County, Florida jury found two men guilty on drug trafficking and related charges tied to a 2022 investigation into narcotics sales across the Leesburg, Mount Dora, and Fruitland Park area. Cliff Demond Johnson, 44, was convicted on a lengthy list of charges including conspiracy to traffic fentanyl and cocaine, manufacturing cocaine, and trafficking cocaine while in possession of a firearm, among other counts. Davonte Marques Heflin, 30, was convicted of conspiracy to traffic fentanyl and unlawful use of a two-way device.

The case was built on an extended investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit, which tracked narcotics sales in the area from February through June 2022. Investigators relied on wiretapped communications and phone records to identify members of the network, including Johnson and Heflin, and to connect them to specific transactions.

Using that intelligence, detectives executed a search warrant at a Fruitland Park residence identified as Johnson’s primary base of operations, recovering trafficking-level quantities of cocaine, multiple pounds of cannabis, and other narcotics. A juvenile was also present at the home at the time of the search. Heflin, who had separately been placed under surveillance and tied to the operation, was taken into custody as the investigation continued.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney Kristalle Smoller, with investigative support from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Clermont, Fruitland Park, Leesburg, Mount Dora, and Eustis police departments. The State Attorney’s Office said the convictions reflect its ongoing commitment to prosecuting those who profit from the drug trade in local communities.
