FDLE-Led Statewide Shield Becomes One of the Largest Child Recovery Operations in U.S. History

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, with state and local partners, announced the recovery of 163 missing children during Operation Statewide Shield — Florida’s first state-led statewide recovery initiative of its kind, and one of the largest child recovery operations in American history.
The five-day operation used real-time intelligence and coordinated field operations to locate missing children under 18 across Florida and move quickly from case to case. Every recovery was logged through Florida’s Missing Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse (MEPIC), the state’s central case-management system, to ensure proper documentation and closure.
Recoveries spanned seven regions of the state — from Tampa Bay (46) and Miami (41) to Jacksonville, Orlando, Fort Myers, Pensacola, and Tallahassee — plus six other states, a U.S. territory, and 12 countries. Children ranged from 2 months to 17 years old, and many had experienced abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
Recovered children were transported to designated recovery hubs for support from social services, medical providers, and victim advocates. The Attorney General’s Office of Statewide Prosecution and the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office are pursuing three felony cases generated by the operation.
Officials credited the results to coordination across government, faith-based, nonprofit, and private-sector partners.
