Last Wednesday, Thomson Reuters partnered with the ACAMS New York Chapter for a discussion on human trafficking risks and financial crime ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The event, held in New York City, brought together public and private sector professionals to share regulatory expectations, reporting obligations, and practical insights into identifying and managing trafficking-related financial risk. It was the first in a planned series of events across six of the World Cup host cities.
Speakers and panelists addressed the elevated risk that large sporting events create for vulnerable populations. Millions of visitors, high transaction volumes, and stretched oversight systems have historically created openings for traffickers to operate. The discussion reinforced the importance of proactive detection and reporting, and the role that financial institutions play in identifying suspicious activity before harm escalates.
The collaboration between Thomson Reuters and ACAMS reflects a broader recognition that combating human trafficking requires coordinated effort across sectors. As the World Cup approaches, events like this one are part of what prepares the anti-financial crime community to respond.
