A federal jury in Brooklyn convicted a Kew Gardens jeweler of extortion conspiracy on May 27, following a three-week trial. Shlomo Patchiav, 45, and an unnamed co-conspirator who remains at large were found guilty of conspiring to extort a Brooklyn man after a $500,000 luxury watch deal between the men fell through in June 2022. The victim was later found dead at an upstate New York residence.
According to prosecutors, Patchiav and his associate repeatedly threatened the victim with violence after he failed to pay them following the collapsed deal. The victim disappeared after a series of financial transactions tied to that pressure campaign, and his body was discovered eight months later.
The case leaned heavily on a digital and financial evidence trail. Surveillance footage placed the victim and the co-conspirator together at a Brooklyn bank branch, where the victim withdrew roughly $10,000 in cash and provided a $20,000 cashier’s check made out to the co-conspirator. Records from a separate tax services office documented the victim signing over his Mercedes-Benz SUV to the co-conspirator that same day — the last confirmed sighting before his disappearance. Investigators then used cell phone location data to place both Patchiav and the co-conspirator to the area where the body was later recovered.
U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Joseph Nocella said the verdict holds Patchiav accountable both for the extortion and for concealing his connection to the case after the victim’s death. The FBI’s New York Field Office echoed that message, describing the case as reflecting a broader commitment to pursuing intimidation and cover-up attempts tied to violent crime.
Patchiav faces up to 20 years in federal prison at sentencing, while the search continues for his co-conspirator.
